Hair Scissors Are Shear Perfection

Sharpen your hair scissors and get ready to style! This season’s hottest hair styles are everywhere but are you prepared? Stying your own hair is one of those things that seems like it should be a no-brainer…but that’s not always the case. You have no chance of success unless you have the right tools for the job and this means professional hair shears.

When you’re running into things because you can’t see through your own bangs, it’s time to figure out a quick, easy, at-home fix. So make sure you use the following tools to get a clean cut if you’re not going to a professional salon.  You will need a water bottle, professional hair scissors, a fine-toothed comb, a mirror, a non-carpeted area and a cape or towel with a clip.

Trying to trim your tresses when they’re dry will definitely create trouble. Wet down the area you’ll be trimming or cutting with the water bottle.  When you use water, the hair will be much more cooperative and matted down, coming in handy when it’s time to use the hair scissors.

After that, it’s time to work with your hair shears. DO NOT use the scissors you use for every day projects in the office. These aren’t specialized for your hair so they won’t do as good of a job as real, professional scissors can do. If you’re going to be trimming your hair at home, it’s definitely a good idea to invest in a high quality pair of hair shears.  A good idea is to always look at reviews online for any type of product before you spend lots of money on it. When looking for the hair shears make sure to go with a pair that is extremely sharp and knick-free. It’s important to store this investment in a cool, dry place to avoid damage or rust.

You’ve probably noticed that your stylist will gather a section of hair and snip it piece by piece to make it more manageable.  The best tool for this style of hair cutting is a fine-tooth comb.  If you get a comb that has wide gaps is harder to use because it doesn’t create as smooth of a surface for your scissors to do their job with your hair. You can find fine-toothed combs at most drugstores or professional hair product stores.

Now that you’ve prepared the tools you’ll need for this job, go find a large mirror and station yourself in front of it. For example, use the one in your bathroom, it’s where you’re used to doing your hair every day and it will give you the feel of your routine to make things easier. Make sure it is a large enough mirror: never think you have the talent to cut without a mirror unless you have professional experience and training

When standing in a carpeted area, the hair that falls will be so much harder to clean up. Have you ever noticed that salons always have tile, wood or some sort of hard surfaced floors?  On hard surfaced floors, all you have to do is a quick sweep when you’re done. But if you use a carpeted area, you’ll have to drag out that vacuum.

Just pretend you’re at your salon for this part. Take a towel or a cape and wrap it around your shoulders, clipping it at the top. This will help the pieces of hair that are so little stay off of your clothes and keep them from itching you all day.

Following this basic process will allow you to find success in your hair cutting routine. Although there are many special tools that are advertised every day, you don’t need them. Use these basic essentials and your mane will thank you. Not to mention it will look clean and refreshed!

Hair Scissors Should Cut Hair, Not Money

Have you ever gone to a hair salon and felt as if you’ve spent your life savings just to get a trim? Don’t spend unnecessarily on a simple hair trim.  In today’s economy we all (seriously, even our favorite celebs) are looking for a way to save money so don’t blow yourself too out of proportion when shopping for the perfect hair scissors to do the job. It’s vital to have professional hair shears, but this doesn’t necessarily mean you have to purchase the most expensive ones.

Before you run off your another quick appointment at the salon, consider your monthly expenses.  Will you have enough money for an expensive trim? Take a hard look at your spending and figure out if it’s worth it to spend money on a simple trim. If not, your next decision is to figure out if you would save more money by splurging on a good quality pair of scissors or by getting your regular six-week haircut.

After you’ve considered all your options, it’s time to move forward either way. If you’re leading down the path of buying shears, do your research. Find out a price range and compare that to the quality of the scissors.  Before you make the purchase, examine the shears’ specific functions and read other consumer reviews.  But how do you decide what to buy? Aren’t scissors all the same? The answer is no, there are many different types of scissors that may vary in size and shape.

Hairdressers usually use shears that are in half-inch increments from 4.5 to 6.5 inches for size.  To mirror what you get from a professional stylist, be sure to find shears that are within this range. Typically, hair scissors that are longer than 6.5″ are barber shears and aren’t what you’re looking for. Do your research to find the hair scissors that are best for you.

One of the most important factors of hair shears is the sharpness of the blade. Make sure that they are extremely sharp! To determine this, practice clipping pieces of a doll’s hair. Comb through the doll’s hair and cut a few times the way you would do on your own hair. If you feel the hair being cut in your fingers or if you can hear a “snitch, snitch“ as you are trimming the doll’s hair, it means that your hair scissors are not sharp enough.

Also think about your hands in this situation. You want them to be comfortable when cutting. After all, the magic can’t happen without the hands! This means you should make sure to order scissors that have big enough or small enough holes for your fingers to fit through. Too small of holes will cause rubbing which leads to blisters and even calluses. If they are too big, your fingers could slip through the holes uncontrollably and cut you very easily. The ideal size means your fingers slide in and out with ease but will not slip.

So what do you think? Splurge on shears or overspend at the salon? For some, a trip to the salon may still be the best option, but it’s definitely worth considering trimming your tresses at home.  The most important factor in your decision could be the quality of hair scissors you have available. It’s time for you to save money on haircuts. Lose your hair, not your money!

Thinning Shears: For And Against

For people with thick and unmanageable hair, thinning hair scissors can be the single most important part of their hair cut experience. This kind of modified hair shear works wonders for people who can’t stand the thickness or poofiness of their locks.

Thinning hair scissors, also known as thinning shears, come in a variety of styles. Overall, they’re quite like usual hair scissors, but one blade features teeth that give it a comb like appearance. How large and how much space between the teeth decides how much (or little) hair is thinned and removed.

Wider teeth will remove less hair while narrow spaces will remove a lot of hair. Thinning shears work by removing bulk through cutting only some of the hair. As your hair falls between the teeth, it is safe from the cut. The rest of the hair receives that thinning chop that will turn your hair into a more manageable thickness.

This is a lot of back and forth in the professional hair world as to whether this style of hair scissors does more harm than good. The opponents to this process are primarily made of up people who have had a traumatic hair experience involved a snip happy stylist.

Those who disagree with these hair scissors claim that they always remove too much hair and will cause a stringy or even a balding appearance. It’s true, if a stylist is too eager to remove thickness, he or she can end up cutting so much that your hair will suffer for months to come as it grows out properly.

Supporters, however, say that you just need to find an experienced hair stylist because thinning hair scissors can save you precious hours in hair styling time and precious dollars in hair styling products. They support this nifty trick wholeheartedly and will recommend it to any poofy haired patron.

Regardless of whether you choose to take a strong stand, keep in mind that this is a cutting process and if not done well, you could suffer from split ends and other adverse effects. Under no circumstances should you request this thinning process more than every four months. That’s a good balance that will allow you to reduce thickness without looking stringy.

And remember, if you have a fiasco…you can always wear a hat.
