Hair Scissors Should Cut Hair, Not Money
Have you ever gone to a hair salon and felt as if you’ve spent your life savings just to get a trim? Don’t spend unnecessarily on a simple hair trim. In today’s economy we all (seriously, even our favorite celebs) are looking for a way to save money so don’t blow yourself too out of proportion when shopping for the perfect hair scissors to do the job. It’s vital to have professional hair shears, but this doesn’t necessarily mean you have to purchase the most expensive ones.
Before you run off your another quick appointment at the salon, consider your monthly expenses. Will you have enough money for an expensive trim? Take a hard look at your spending and figure out if it’s worth it to spend money on a simple trim. If not, your next decision is to figure out if you would save more money by splurging on a good quality pair of scissors or by getting your regular six-week haircut.
After you’ve considered all your options, it’s time to move forward either way. If you’re leading down the path of buying shears, do your research. Find out a price range and compare that to the quality of the scissors. Before you make the purchase, examine the shears’ specific functions and read other consumer reviews. But how do you decide what to buy? Aren’t scissors all the same? The answer is no, there are many different types of scissors that may vary in size and shape.
Hairdressers usually use shears that are in half-inch increments from 4.5 to 6.5 inches for size. To mirror what you get from a professional stylist, be sure to find shears that are within this range. Typically, hair scissors that are longer than 6.5″ are barber shears and aren’t what you’re looking for. Do your research to find the hair scissors that are best for you.
One of the most important factors of hair shears is the sharpness of the blade. Make sure that they are extremely sharp! To determine this, practice clipping pieces of a doll’s hair. Comb through the doll’s hair and cut a few times the way you would do on your own hair. If you feel the hair being cut in your fingers or if you can hear a “snitch, snitch“ as you are trimming the doll’s hair, it means that your hair scissors are not sharp enough.
Also think about your hands in this situation. You want them to be comfortable when cutting. After all, the magic can’t happen without the hands! This means you should make sure to order scissors that have big enough or small enough holes for your fingers to fit through. Too small of holes will cause rubbing which leads to blisters and even calluses. If they are too big, your fingers could slip through the holes uncontrollably and cut you very easily. The ideal size means your fingers slide in and out with ease but will not slip.
So what do you think? Splurge on shears or overspend at the salon? For some, a trip to the salon may still be the best option, but it’s definitely worth considering trimming your tresses at home. The most important factor in your decision could be the quality of hair scissors you have available. It’s time for you to save money on haircuts. Lose your hair, not your money!
