A Brief Overview of Big Jewelry Boxes

When you hear ‘large jewelry boxes’, pictures of sword-bearing pirates, fiery battles on ships, and hunts for hidden treasure, come to mind. But the jewelry armoires of today, inlayed with gold and precious stones, have come a long way from the mouldy old crude chests of yesteryears .

The word ‘armoire’ is said to have its origins in both French and Latin and could mean either ‘gun cabinet’ or ‘tool chest’. The earliest jewelry armoires are probably the large cabinets with ornately carved doors made in France in the 16th century. Queen Elizabeth’s jewelry storage room located beneath the Buckingham Palace could perhaps be called an armoire too! Usually, a large jewelry box is one that stands on its legs and has many drawers, trays, and doors. Typically a jewelry armoire has 3 to 4 legs and has never gone beyond or less than that number.
